Valletta, Malta’s Capital, together with the rest of  Malta hosted the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018.

The title of European Capital of Culture is granted annually by the European Commission to two cities in the European Union, following an internal competition between cities. This serves as an opportunity for a city to excel in art and culture.

The aim of the Cultural Programme is to:

• highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures
• celebrate the cultural ties that link Europeans together
• bring people from different European countries into contact with each other’s culture and promote mutual understanding
• foster a feeling of European citizenship.

Imagine 18 was the slogan Valletta presented at bidding stage which gave it the title of ECoC.

Valletta’s journey towards the European Capital of Culture (ECoC), or V.18 as it is often referred to, aspires to be the driving force behind cultural and creative activity in Valletta and Malta at large. This project will set the stage for new ideas, dialogue, creativity and innovation to flow freely amongst participants.

In July 2013 the Grand Hotel Excelsior reached an agreement of collaboration with the Foundation for the Valletta 2018. The Grand Hotel Excelsior is now the official hotel for the Valletta 2018.

Mr. Jason Micallef, the Chairman for the Foundation Valletta 2018 and Mr Norbert Grixti, the General Manager of the Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta.

Mr Norbert Grixti, the General Manager of the Grand Hotel Excelsior commented that the tourism industry appreciates the added value Malta has to offer, especially due to our unique attractions like the capital city of Malta, Valletta. He elaborated on the fact that the works that are being carried out in Valletta will contribute towards an enhanced tourism product and a superior tourist experience for visitors in Malta.
